Ventspils (German: Windau) is a city in northwestern Latvia on the coast of the Baltic Sea. It is named after the Venta River, which passes through the city. Ventspils had a population around 40,000 in 2006. Ventspils is an important ice-free port. Large amounts of oil and other mineral resources from Russia are loaded aboard ships at Ventspils. Thirty kilometres north of Ventspils is the ex-Soviet radioastronomy installation VIRAC (Ventspils International Radio Astronomy Centre). The existence of the Centrs was unknown to most Latvians until the withdrawal of the Soviets at the end of occupation in 1994.

Valmiera is the largest city of the historical Vidzeme region, Latvia, with a total area of 18.1 km². It is the center of the Valmiera district, or county (Latvian: Valmieras rajons). As of 2002, Valmiera had a population approx. 30,000. It lies at the crossroads of several important roads, 100 km to the north-east from Riga, the capital of Latvia, and 50 km south of the border with Estonia. Valmiera lies on both banks of the Gauja River. Valmiera and its surroundings have been one of the longest-inhabited regions of Latvia. Valmiera was a member of the Hanseatic League from the 14th-16th centuries. Involvement in the Hansa brought significant trade and movement into the town’s life.

Kuldīga is a town in western Latvia. It is the center of Kuldigas County with a population of approximately 13,500. Kuldīga was first mentioned in 1242. It joined the Hanseatic League in 1368. In the 17th century, Kuldīga (along with Jelgava (Mitau) was one of the capitals of the Duchy of Courland. The main sight in Kuldīga is Ventas rumba, a 249-meter wide natural rapid which is the widest in Europe. Kuldiga, the ancient town of Courland (Kurzeme), lies on the River Venta where the waterfall Rumba has formed. Today Kuldiga is the district centre with 13,5 thousand inhabitants. The most popular and exciting event is the traditional Kuldiga Town Festival, which takes place at the 3rd weekend of July.

Rezekne borders with Russia, Lithuania and Byelorussia. It has become a border city between EU, NATO and the Eastern states. Rezekne is located 242 km from the state capital Riga, 685 km from Moscow, 450 km from St. Petersburg, and 860 km from Warsaw. The same as Rome, Rezekne lies on seven hills and through the city flows River Rezekne (length approx. 10 km) that joins the biggest lakes of Latvia - Rāzna and Lubāns.

Amata municipality (Latvian: Amatas novads) is a municipality in Vidzeme, Latvia. The municipality was formed in 2000 by merging Amata parish and Drabeši parish, but in 2009 it absorbed Nītaure parish, Skujene parish and Zaube parish, too the administrative centre being Drabeši.
